Distance learning courses are not for everyone. They require a unique commitment from the student. Good time management skills, motivation, and self-discipline are essential for success in a DL environment. Distance learning courses are not easier or harder than on-campus courses, but they do require a special kind of dedication.

Successful online students often love the independence associated with online learning. But with independence comes the need for greater discipline to keep up with studies. Some students are more comfortable with regular classroom sessions.

Although many colleges and universities make the transition from the classroom to the computer virtually seamless, the nature of online learning is technologically demanding. You'll need to be familiar and comfortable with the Internet, downloading software (when necessary), and simulating all classroom activities (discussions, quest-and-answer, quizzes and tests, etc.) online.

In an Online learning class, you log onto a web site to find all your course materials. You probably also have to buy a textbook, but the syllabus, notes, "hand outs," quizzes, and assignments are all on the web. Your instructor may have scheduled a few real-time meetings that you will have to work into your schedule, and you may have to come in for a final exam, but otherwise, all your work is done through this web site and e-mail (and perhaps phone when necessary). You log onto this web site three or four times a week to pick up assignments, read notes, and participates in class.
